September 25 is World Overshoot Day
Sep 25, 2009
As of today, humanity demands more from the regenerative capacities of the earth than nature can provide in this year. From now until the end of the year, we will meet our demands from nature (such as energy, food and timber) by depleting stocks and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. World Overshoot Day is the result of calculations by Global Footprint Network. It means that for this year we have plundered our bank account with nature, and we are now borrowing from the future.
Global Footprint Network is developing a system to measure the footprint we leave on the earth, with a great visual effect.
I've been invited to a Dutch overshootparty but I'm afraid there is very little to celebrate :-(.
